RTI:
Response to Intervention
Practical and Effective
Implementation of
Response to Intervention
Workshop Description: Response to
Intervention (RTI) is being adopted in school systems across the
country as the primary method for identifying students with learning
disabilities. When implemented effectively, RTI has the potential
to rule out inadequate instruction as the cause for learning
problems while providing intense instruction at the first signs of
learning difficulty.
Response to
Intervention involves a process of implementing high quality
instruction, monitoring student progress using curriculum based
measurement, and adjusting instruction based on student outcomes.
On the surface, it seems to be a very simple task. Yet, actual
implementation is proving to be difficult in many areas due to the
fact that few teachers and administrators have been trained in the
components of RTI.
This workshop provides practical
information designed to enable teachers and administrators to
implement the RTI process effectively in their districts, schools,
and classrooms. The workshop includes basic information about RTI
based on the work of leading researchers and agencies with vast
experience in its implementation. Components of both standard
protocol and problem solving models are discussed. Additional
topics include resources for selection of research-based strategies;
components of curriculum based measurement; student data management;
and considerations for English Language Learners, African American
students and students living in poverty. In the multi-day
presentation, participants develop a RTI plan for a student from
their school.
